Tamarindo grew from a fishing village into Guanacaste's liveliest beach town, so it now sleeps every kind of traveler: beachfront resorts in the center, boutique hideaways, surf camps and hostels, and quiet villas around Playa Langosta just south of town. The Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort is the town's original beachfront resort, right in the middle of everything with pools facing the sand. Steps away, the Wyndham Tamarindo brings a modern full-service option, and El Coconut-adjacent beachfront walkways lead to sunset dinner spots. From these you walk barefoot to the surf schools, restaurants and shops — no car needed all week.
Tamarindo's boutique tier is its sweet spot. Hotel Capitán Suizo, on the calm south end of the beach, is the longtime special-occasion pick (howler monkeys included); Jardín del Edén Boutique Hotel looks over town from a hill of gardens; Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas hides by Playa Langosta; and the adults-only rooftop scene at The Roof plus long-runners like Hotel Pasatiempo and Hotel Arco Iris round out the middle range.
Tamarindo is one of the world's easiest places to learn to surf, and its lodging proves it: Witch's Rock Surf Camp is the famous all-in-one (rooms, boards, coaches and boat trips to Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point), Dreamsea Surf Camp does tents-to-suites in the jungle, and Zulu Surf Hotel keeps it stylish on the beach road. Ten minutes' walk south, Playa Langosta is the leafy, residential escape: Cala Luna and the villa streets around it put you near the river-mouth surf break but away from the nightlife. On the hill above town, Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas trades beach access for big Pacific views. Families who want the beach without the late music usually land in Langosta.
