For a town you can walk end to end in twenty minutes, Tamarindo eats absurdly well: 50+ restaurants in our Restaurants & Cafés directory, from roadside sodas in Villarreal to chef-driven dining that draws people up from San José. The scene hugs the beach road and the Langosta road, with cheaper, more local eating a five-minute drive inland. High season evenings get busy — book the famous spots ahead.
The casado — rice, beans, plantains and your choice of protein — is still the best-value meal in town. Soda Típica Donde Saby and Soda El Buen Sabor are the go-to plates near the center, Soda La Marimba and Soda Las Palmas keep prices honest, and driving five minutes to Villarreal (Soda El Guanacaste, Pizza Express) cuts your bill in half. Fresh fruit batidos with everything, of course.
Sunset is Tamarindo's nightly festival. Pangas Beach Club, at the calm river-mouth end, is the elegant toes-in-sand classic; El Coconut has done beachfront seafood for decades; Nogui's is the old fishermen's favorite on the point (pie mandatory); and Langosta Beach Club pairs a beach day with a proper dinner. Come 5 p.m., order something cold, and watch the boards come in — the tamarindo surf crowd rinses off and eats at the same tables.
This is where Tamarindo surprises people. Seasons by Shlomy is the long-running Mediterranean tasting-menu favorite; La Kitchen plates modern fusion; Delmonico's handles the steak-night crowd; Enea La Vera Cucina and El Jardín de Tamarindo cover Italy and garden-romantic respectively; and Utopia French Bistro brings Burgundy to the beach road. Between surf sessions: Green Papaya Taco Bar is the town's beloved taquería, Little Lucha its scrappier cousin; Bamboo Sushi Club rolls the post-surf sushi; The Burger Joint and LongBoards BBQ feed the hungry; Wok N Roll stir-fries late; and El Mercadito food hall lets a group argue less — a dozen kitchens, one table. Craft beer? Volcano Brewing Company pours its own on the beach.
Tamarindo takes coffee seriously — Coffee lists nine spots including Nordico Specialty Coffee, Tamarindo Coffee Roasters and juice bars like Mandarina. For bread and pastry, Masa Madre Bakery & Food Lab is the sourdough cult, with Catalina Artisan Bakery and Sol Bakery close behind under Food Makers — and Saturday morning's Tama Market farmers market is the best breakfast in town. Sprout and Waffle Monkey cover healthy bowls and indulgence respectively.
Tamarindo's night starts at sunset bars like El Vaquero on the sand (Beach Bars), warms up at Bar Jolly Roger and the dive bars, and ends dancing at Crazy Monkey, El Garito or The Lotus (Night Clubs). Most places are walkable — but grab a taxi from Taxis & Shuttles for the late ride to Langosta.
